Postdoctoral Position: XLZD Dark Matter Search Experiment (Ref: B04-05176)
The UCL High Energy Physics Group has an immediate opening for an outstanding PhD particle or astroparticle physicist to work on pre-construction efforts for XLZD, the world’s most sensitive dark matter and rare physics observatory. The position is a joint appointment with King's College London (KCL), funded through 3 years.
XLZD will be the definitive WIMP dark matter search experiment. Its multi-ten tonne dual-phase xenon detector will also be used to competitively search for neutrinoless double beta decay and other beyond the Standard Model processes. The control and assessment of radiative backgrounds will be critical for XLZD to achieve ground-breaking science. This position represents an exciting opportunity for the postholder to be involved from the very beginning of the XLZD preliminary activity in the UK, delivering and leading impactful elements of the radioassay and clean manufacture work package. The candidate will be expected to spend time at the Boulby Underground Laboratory, a leading contender to host XLZD, with a history of direct dark matter searches.
UCL is renowned for dark matter research: the team holds the spokespersonship and heads the primary analyses of LZ, the current world-leading WIMP search experiment. The dark matter team has strong links with Boulby and worked with them to deliver on radiopurity for LZ. The HEP group consists of around 80 staff and students and provides an exciting and supportive research environment with involvement in direct dark matter searches, particle astrophysics, particle phenomenology, neutrino experiments, accelerator R&D and data-intensive science via our Centre for Doctoral Training.
The salary will be in the Researcher Grade 7 range: £42,099 - £50,585 per annum, depending on skills and experience.
