Minutes for UCL Proton Calorimetry Meeting, 24th January 2018 (D17, Physics & Astronomy, UCL)

Present

Simon Jolly, Laurent Kelleter, Matthieu Hentz, Anastasia Basharina-Freshville, Jordan Silverman, Dan Walker

LK:

  • Investigating image acquisition for Nikon camera:
    • Using SJ liquid scintillator image to test reconstruction.
    • Integrating single column of pixels to get 1D curve.
    • Gets an approximate Bragg curve from integrated signal but reflections in image make curve poor.
  • To Do:
    • Computer upgraded to Centos7: fit doesn't work any more (ROOT integrator fails).
    • Find a way to deal with very different scintillator slice thicknesses
    • Data format of ISDI sensor?
    • Make everything more smooth and ready-to-use for users
    • Make sure camera hardware is set up ready for DAQ.

JS:

  • Making measurements of scintillator sheet thickness:
    • 3 mm sheets are closer to 2.75 mm but variation is mostly below 100 microns.
    • 2 mm sheets have 2 groupings:
    • 2.0 mm group has better flatness than 2.6 mm group.
  • Also been playing around with Clatterbridge simulations:
    • Tried running on Centos7.
    • Will go back to SL6 as it actually works properly...
  • To Do:
    • Split up 2 mm sheet results into the 2 groups.
    • Meeting with Matthieu on Clatterbridge simulations.
    • Get them running on SL6.

DW:

  • Investigating negative integrated waveforms form LeCroy binary files:
    • One bad pulse comes from small tail in leading pulse region.
    • Reducing standard deviation for this region cuts out bad pulse.
  • Put up instructions on LeCroy binary file conversion for Tony Price on PBTWiki.
  • To Do:
    • Adding integration window to get spectrum to match Caen ADC data.
    • Badger Tony Price for tracker files.

ABF:

  • Writing paper: finish off plots and majority of writing.
  • Painting scintillator sheets:
    • Both paints look good so far.
    • Will check on Monday for painting all sheets.
  • Final version of 3 month plan requested by SJ:
    • Will include notes from previous meetings and circulate.
    • Will not include any details of final plans for beam tests: waiting for discussion with Ruben Saakyan.
    • SJ strongly objected to choice not to decide on complete schedule in advance, but left choice to ABF.
    • SJ requested to be involved in meeting with RS regarding final beam schedule.
  • To Do:
    • Complete main draft of schedule (but NOT including requirements for beam tests).
    • Painting scintillator.
    • First draft by next week.

MH:

  • Finished all first term exams and coursework.
  • Second term courses starting to bear fruit! But needs to learn background mathematics...
  • Will attend proton imaging workshop in Lyon, 14–15 June.
  • Currently compiling Geant4 on Virtual Machine on new MacBook.
  • To Do:
    • Meeting with Jordan on Wednesday.
    • Buffering of readout in Geant4.
